he Porsche Cayenne's looks have been the subject of much debate, to say the least, though whilst the hardcore sports car brigade have been unconvinced by a 4x4 wearing the Porsche badge, SUV buyers have had few such qualms. The success of the Cayenne has meant that there will be no radical overhaul: these shots suggest that the next-generation model will be little changed. Perhaps influenced by the large numbers of Cayennes around which have been fitted with aftermarket body kits and modifications, Porsche has opted to make the new model a little more aggressive . The headlights have been sharpened up, and there's even more chromed detailing, plus wider bumpers and side skirts. At the rear, the Cayenne receives a fat, oval exhaust pipe to each side of its bumper or, if a Turbo example, two pairs of exhausts and a LED unit by the air intakes, as on the 911 Turbo. The overall shape of the Cayenne remains much the same, but the longer front overhangs suggests modifications to meet the latest pedestrian protection legislation. No clues yet as to the powertrain line-up, though this may just involve updated versions of the current V6, V8 and V8 turbo units - fitting all-new engines would require substantial re-engineering of the engine bay and overall drivetrain, a major undertaking for a minor facelift. There will, however, be a hybrid version, which will share its powertrain with the Audi Q7 and Volkswagen Toaureg. The Mk2 Cayenne is scheduled to make its debut at the Detroit Motor Show in January, with sales starting later in 2007. Besides the structural and styling changes, expect also a general upgrade to the cabin and equipment levels.
