BMW muestra el único compacto E36 M3 de fábrica jamás construido

Cuando BMW estaba preparando la Serie E36 3, también quería tener una versión más pequeña para competir con las escotillas calientes del día. Así nació el E36 Compact.
El estilo de la carrocería se diseñó principalmente para ser una entrada rentable en la línea de la Serie 3 y, como resultado, nunca se vendió
una versión M3 del Compact. Sin embargo, eso no significa que nunca se construyó.
En su último video, BMW Group Classic muestra el 1996 E36 M3 Compact, uno de uno. A pesar de las pequeñas proporciones del automóvil, BMW todavía lanzó el motor S50B32 de seis cilindros en línea
del M3 Coupé , que producía 321 hp.
Su cuerpo más corto de 23 centímetros (9 pulgadas) significaba que también era más liviano que el Coupé. Sin embargo, para asegurar su potencia, BMW también lo puso en una dieta de choque y le dio asientos de cubo de carreras Recaro, molduras de Alcantara y una barra antivuelco. En total, el M3 Compact inclinó la balanza a 1.300 kg (2.866 libras), por lo que es 150 kg (330 libras) más ligero que el Coupé.
A pesar de ser más corta, la distancia entre ejes era idéntica para el Compact, lo que significaba que no se sacrificaba la estabilidad. Desafortunadamente,
BMW no siguió adelante con el proyecto y el M3 Compact nunca llegó a la línea de producción.
Afortunadamente para
el mundo entusiasta , todos los ingredientes estaban ahí, por lo que algunas réplicas llegaron a existir a pesar de la reticencia de BMW.

When BMW was getting the E36 3 Series ready, it also wanted to have a smaller version to compete with the hot hatches of the day. Thus, the E36 Compact was born.
The body style was primarily designed to be a cost-effective entry into the 3-Series lineup and, as a result,
an M3 version of the Compact was never sold. That doesn’t mean, though, that one was never built.
In its latest video, BMW Group Classic shows off the one-of-one 1996 E36 M3 Compact. Despite the car’s small proportions, BMW still threw in the S50B32 straight-six engine from
the M3 Coupe, which produced 321 hp.
Its 23-centimeter (9-inch) shorter body meant that it was lighter than the Coupe, too. To ensure its potency, though, BMW also put it on a crash diet and gave it Recaro racing bucket seats, Alcantara trim, and a roll-bar. All told, the M3 Compact tipped the scales at 1,300 kg (2,866 lbs), making it 150 kg (330 lbs) lighter than the Coupe.
Despite being shorter, the wheelbase was actually identical for the Compact, which meant that stability wasn’t sacrificed. Unfortunately,
BMW didn’t go ahead with the project and the M3 Compact never made it to the production line.
Fortunately for
the enthusiast world, all the ingredients were out there, so a few replicas did make it into existence despite BMW’s reticence.
