BMW M2 Competition Racer Makes Its Debut, Engineers Clearly Have More Work To Do
BY DAN MIHALASCU | POSTED ONAUGUST 5, 2019

BMW M2 Competition race car made its competitive premiere this Saturday, August 3, at the VLN’s fifth race of the season on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

Still wearing a full body camouflage, the racer completed the 6 hours endurance race, but the result was nothing to write home about. The successor to the M240i Racing crossed the finish line second-to-last in a not-too-flattering 109th place.

Obviously, that’s because BMW Motorsport’s purpose was not to win the race but continue the development of the car in racing conditions. Wearing starting number 160, the car was helmed by BMW Motorsport Junior driver Beitske Visser and Jörg Weidinger, a test and development engineer at BMW M GmbH and BMW Sports Trophy competitor for many years.

The M2 Competition racer ran in the SP8T class, which also included the Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT4 and Mercedes-AMG GT4. Interestingly, that’s different to the CUP5 in which the M240i Racing Cup took part. Thanks to our spy photographers, we can show you a detailed gallery of Munich’s latest track weapon at the Nürburgring.

The photos reveal the racing aerodynamic package featuring a front splitter and massive fixed rear wing, a hood vent, as well as two additional scoops under the headlights. Other details unique to this car include the motorsport rims and tires, as well as the racing suspension that keeps the car glued to the tarmac.

The photos also award a look inside the cockpit which is as expected. There’s a butterfly steering wheel with a carbon fiber core and Alcantara-clad grip area, complete with buttons and paddle shifters, as well as an additional carbon fiber center console that brings essential controls closer to the driver. The interior is stripped out of all unnecessary things and features a roll cage, two Recaro bucket seats and a fire extinguishing system.

BMW is developing two versions of the new entry-level race car, the Racing and the Clubsport. Both should feature a race-spec version of the 3.0-liter twin-turbo straight-six which makes 410 PS (404 hp) and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque in the road car. First deliveries are scheduled for the second quarter of 2020.

Ayer lo vieron en Bélgica

M2 CS details from the private preview event held in Belgium yesterday:
    • 450 hp
    • Manual gear box, DKG optional
    • Adaptive suspension
    • Red caliper sport brakes, carbon ceramic optional
    • 763 M wheel gold or black, regular or sport cup tires,no change in tire size
    • Carbon fiber parts: hood, roof, outside mirrors, trunk lip, front spoiler lip, rear diffuser, central console, door handle
    • Chrome m2 cs badge on the trunk
    • Alcantara on side of the seats and doors like on the M2C, additional alcantara on top of the central console and on the dash board (ipo of the regular or carbon trim). CS embroied on the alcantara dashboard trim
    • Alcantara steering wheel optional
    • M4 Competition seats with red stitching and I believe Merino leather (for sure not Dakota). Dashboard and top door panel remain same than on the M2C and therefore imo do not blend well with the finer grain leather
    • M Performance exhaust
    • Back seats cannot be folded anymore
    • 4 paints only : Alpine White,Misano Blue,Hockenheim Silver and Saphire Black
    • Apparently no claim by BMW of any weight saving
    • Climate control unit seems a little bit different than on my late 2018 M2C
    • Start of Production : 3/2020
    • End of Production : 12/2020 i.e 9 months production only
    • 2200 cars worldwide, 100 for Benelux
    • No word of a possible CSL version after (believe they were clueless more than trying to hide anything)

Was definively not convinced by the combo blue paint /gold wheel/red caliper. Others combo should work better. Also think the large mesh of the carbon roof does not look that nice. The dome of hood is not very noticeable although there is first a side recessed part than an elevation (may be this was due to the light of the room or the paint)

Should definitely be a great car but the base price is high (95 K Euro in Belgium) considering that it is mainly M performance and M4 competition bit and pieces added. Does not really feel unique.

M8 competition in frozen blue was also on display in the adjacent show room. Looks great but it is a big car !

    43 kg menos...
    • the tested M2 Competition (M-DCT) weighed 1631 kg (full tank of fuel included), apparently had no M Driver's Package (because data sheet notes V-max of 250 km/u - Parabolika speed 232 km/h), featured steel brakes, was sitting on Pilot Super Sport tires (likely on 19" 788M wheels) and was driving in 1°C/34°F air temp + 1°C/34°F track temp and 1020 mbar air pressure;
    • the tested M2 CS (M-DCT) weighed 1588 kg (full tank of fuel included), apparently had M Driver's Package (because data sheet notes V-max of 280 km/h - Parabolika speed 248 km/h), featured M-CCB (bigger rotors), was sitting on Cup 2 tires (likely on lightweight 19" 763M wheels) and was driving in 32°C/90°F air temp + 53°C/127°F track temp and 1015 mbar air pressure.

M2 CS vs M2 Competition tested at Hockenheim GP-Kurs track. The test wasn't back to back. Though interestingly the CS seems not much quicker considering the ambient temp, brake and tire difference.

    Performance figures:

    M2 CS: 1:55.8 min laptime
    M2 Competition: 1:57.9 min laptime

    M2 CS 0-100kmh: 4.1s
    M2 Competition 0-100kmh: 4.5s

    M2 CS slalom: 70.6 kmh
    M2 Competition salmon: 71.1 kmh

    M2 CS 100-0 braking distance: 32.9 meters
    M2 Competition 100-0 braking distance: 34.1 meters
