The next-generation BMW 6-Series, due spring 2011, is a rather conservative evolution. The cabriolet pictured here will even retain a traditional canvas hood. The rear window on this prototype is a mock-up, however, to hide the roof's structure. It's a safe bet that this will be revised for neater stowage and improved refinement. The 6-Series' wheelbase will be lengthened to provide more cabin space, but its dimensions will otherwise be little changed - the nose will be shortened, giving only a small increase in overall length. The roofline is slightly lower, but the most notable change will be the now-frameless side windows, uninterrupted by a B-pillar. All four windows of the Convertible will be fully retracting. Headlights, tail-lights and grille will receive minor revisions and some of the current car's crease-lines and angles smoothed off and toned down. Inside the cabin - still with a 2+2 layout - expect updates to the dashboard and upholstery, with increased equipment levels. There will be updated night-vision and head-up display functions, active cruise control, heated headrests, and lane departure warning systems, as well as variable suspension damping and a power-operated wind deflector. Engines for the range will again be the 3.0- and 5.0-litre petrol units of the 630i and 650i (currently 272bhp and 367bhp respectively, though insiders suggest that the straight-six could be uprated to 300bhp, and the V8 to 400bhp), plus the 635d six-cylinder diesel (which may be uprated to 300bhp). A new dual-clutch automated manual gearbox (similar to Volkswagen's DSG) will replace the current SMG (sequential manual gearbox) option and manual versions may even be discontinued altogether. 'Mild' hybrid versions with stop-start and performance-boosting super capacitors will follow - though the M6 is now expected to get a turbocharged version of the 4.4 V8, giving around 500bhp, in place of the current V10.
