Audi is aiming to offer a racier rival to the Porsche Cayman and Boxster with its TT S, tipped to go on sale next year. Thought to be on the way in both coupe and roadster bodystyles, it won't be the most powerful TT in the range, but it will be the most sportily-styled.
Power comes from the familiar turbocharged 2.0 TFSI engine, boosted to 280bhp and fitted in combination with a six-speed manual gearbox and the Quattro four-wheel-drive system. The DSG sequential-shift gearbox will be optional.
This isn't the hottest upcoming TT, however. There are also rumours of a 2.5-litre, twin-turbo TT RS developing up to 350bhp to rival the Cayman S: 2009 would be the earliest possible date for this, with 2010 more likely. There's also the Clubsport Quattro, a stripped-out speedster-style version of the roadster which could go into limited-edition production.
