New SSC Tuatara Video Is A Quick Tour Inside The Million-Dollar Hypercar

Only 100 units will be built, so there's a little chance for you to see one on the road.
Shelby SuperCars (SSC) sure knew how to build excitement around its touted SSC Tuatara hypercar. The American company took almost a decade before coming up with an actual car, which was announced as early as 2011. Nine years of waiting – but at least that's relatively shorter than what Tool fans had to endure, waiting for 13 years for the rock band to release a full-length album.

But just like Tool's Fear Inoculum, SSC made sure that the Tuatara was worth the wait. Donning a devilishly black/red color theme, the Tuatara is one sinister-looking hypercar. And this new video (embedded on top) from the SSC North America should give you a quick tour inside the exotic hypercar.

As a million-dollar hypercar, the video gives us a quick peek at what the Tuatara can offer. Expect everything that money can buy in the cabin, such as full-color displays for the infotainment and instrument cluster, along with a claimed roomy creature space that SSC said could fit someone as tall as 6 feet 5 inches on a racing helmet.

And yes, a helmet is important if you're taking this car on a track, as the SSC Tuatara comes with a lot of grunts. Powered by a twin-turbocharged 5.9-liter flat-plane-crank V8, the Tuatara makes 1,750 horsepower (1,305 kilowatts) on E85 and 1,350 hp (1007 kW) on 91 octane, sent to the wheels via a robotized CIMA seven-speed transmission that can shift gears in less than 100 milliseconds.

The Tuatara's price wasn't announced at launch but it has been reported that the price tag can reach almost $2 million if you tick all the options. Only 100 units of this hypercar will be built, so there's a little chance that you'll see one on the road.

For those who can't afford to spend that amount of money, SSC confirmed that a smaller and more affordable brother of the Tuatara is planned – although don't expect that to be revealed within five years or so.

Producer's Reaction After Riding Shotgun With SSC Tuatara Is Priceless

He was lost for words, and understandably so.
There are plenty of SSC Tuatara videos out there. With production numbers limited to only a hundred units, and with almost a decade-long wait for the actual car to happen, Shelby SuperCars makes sure that we on the interwebs know that the Tuatara is something to behold with.

While the previous Tuatara videos we've seen involve close-up looks or even acceleration runs touting its thousands of horses, this latest video involves a shotgun passenger – Los Angeles producer and hypercar aficionado Buddy Wyrick.

Even better, SSC North America Founder and CEO Jerod Shelby is at the helm, giving Wyrick an exclusive first-hand experience of what's it like to be a passenger inside the million-dollar hypercar. It was a casual shotgun ride... at first.

Based on the video embedded on top, Wyrick's reactions were priceless. There's even a moment when Wyrick looked like he was scared for his life, which he admitted at the latter part of the six-minute footage. We can only imagine the feeling, however, but based on Wyrick's reaction, we can't help but wonder if we'll ever get our hands on one.

Just in case you forgot, the Tuatara is powered by a 5.9-liter twin-turbocharged flat-plane-crank V8 that makes 1,750 horsepower (1,305 kilowatts) on E85 and 1,350 hp (1007 kW) on 91 octane. It has a dry weight of 2,750 pounds (1,247 kilograms) and a drag coefficient of 0.279.

Adding more to its prominence is the Tuatara's acceleration from 60 to 120 mph (96 to 193 km/h) in just 2.5 seconds.

It's mind-boggling, yes, and so is its price tag that can reach almost $2 million. Yep, we're not going to get into one. Not in this lifetime, at least.

    Top Gear

Top Gear can exclusively reveal that Shelby SuperCars (SSC) North America has set a new production car top speed record, hitting a VMAX of 331mph and setting a two-way average of 316.11mph on a seven-mile stretch of closed road just outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. Climb on board for the outrageous 0-331mph run as Top Gear is granted exclusive footage from the guys that are making the full feature-length documentary of this epic endeavour, landing later in the year.

SSC Tuatara Hits Mind-Blowing 331 MPH, Is Officially The World’s Fastest Production Car

    OCTOBER 19, 2020 7

SSC has broken the top speed record for a production car with the Tuatara, after achieving a mind-blowing 331 mph (532.7 km/h) and a two-way average of 316.11 mph (508.7 km/h) on a closed road in Nevada.

Following last week’s report on the matter, Top Gear revealed Tuatara’s new world speed record by releasing the onboard footage of the hypercar’s 0-331 mph run.

Unlike the one-direction 304.77 mph Bugatti achieved with the Chiron Super Sport 300+, Shelby SuperCars (SSC) did a proper two-way average run with the Tuatara, hitting a certified average of 316.11 mph and regaining the title of the fastest production car on the planet.

The Tuatara was driven by British racing driver Oliver Webb on the same piece of tarmac Koenigsegg used back in 2017, when an Agera RS posted a two-way average of 277.9 mph (447.2 km/h) and a top speed of 284.55 mph (457 km/h).

Webb managed 301.07 mph (484.53 km/h) on his first run before turning around and achieving the unbelievable 331.15 mph run.

“There was definitely more in there,” Webb said to Top Gear. “And with better conditions, I know we could have gone faster, as I approached 331 mph, the Tuatara climbed almost 20mph within the last five seconds. The car wasn’t running out of steam yet. The crosswinds are all that prevented us from realising the car’s limit.”

The SSC Tuatara is powered by a twin-turbo 5.9-liter flat-plane crank V8 that pumps out 1,750 HP when running on E85. In addition, the drag coefficient is a very slippery 0.279, which is immensely helpful if you plan on achieving these insane speeds.

“It’s been ten years since we held this record with our first car, the Ultimate Aero, and the Tuatara is leagues ahead. Its performance reflects the dedication and focus with which we pursued this achievement,” said Jerod Shelby, CEO of SSC. “We came pretty close to meeting the theoretical numbers, which is astonishing to do in a real world setting on a public road.”

    .-------------------------------------------------

Picked your jaw up off the floor yet? Good. Just when we thought 2020 couldn’t get any more surreal, Team America smashes Bugatti’s 304.77mph set in that go-faster Chiron at Ehra-Lessien. Better than that, on Saturday 10 October, SSC did it in two directions – something the Chiron failed to do – stealing the crown off Bugatti and once again beating the hypercar glitterati fair and square. Just like it did way back in 2007.

To hit an average speed of 316.11 mph (508.73 km/h), British racing driver Oliver Webb got behind the wheel, pointed the nose at the horizon and pinned it down the two-lane highway. On his first run he hit 301.07 mph (484.53 km/h) – spicy speeds in anyone’s book, but not good enough for an official world record.

So he turned the car around and did exactly the same in the other direction, this time not letting his foot off the throttle until he hit 331.15 mph (532.93 km/h), good enough for an average of 316.11mph to make the SSC Tuatara the fastest production vehicle on the planet.

The straight section of State Route 160 between Las Vegas and Pahrump may ring a bell, especially if you’re a speed freak. It’s the same bit of tarmac made famous by Koenigsegg in 2017, when it claimed the title of world’s fastest production car from SSC’s previous creation, the Ultimate Aero (which hit 255.83mph on a closed road in Washington State in 2007, itself taking the title from the Bugatti Veyron).

The Swedish Agera RS posted a two-way average of 277.9mph in Nevada, with a w-max of 284.55mph. SSC has just added nearly 40mph on top of that average. Stop and think about that for a second. Now breathe.

I know we could have gone faster - Oli Webb

Just what the hell is the SSC Tuatara? Well, it first broke cover in 2011 as the replacement for the Ultimate Aero. Since its inception Top Gear has been following its progress and exclusively drove the development car last year, and unsurprisingly, we found it to be rather brisk to drive.

Built in Richlands, Washington, USA, the 1,247kg hypercar is powered by a twin-turbocharged 5.9-litre flat-plane crank V8 producing 1,750 horsepower. But power only gets you so far. The Tuatara’s crazy v-max comes in no small part from the outlandish design of its carbon fibre bodywork. That bit is the work of Jason Castriota, he of Maserati Birdcage Concept, Ferrari P4/5, Ford Mach-E and Saab Phoenix fame. From the outset, Castriota stressed the focus on delivering a crazy 0.279 drag coefficient and an aero-centric philosophy. The Tuatara’s slinky ability to pierce through the air effectively is obvious towards the end of the run; the Tuatara furiously blasts from 250-300mph and beyond, not pausing for breath. Now check out Bugatti’s run – where the Chiron is headbutting an aerodynamic wall.

Having completed the run (and Amazon Prime’d a larger pair of undercrackers to house his new, plumper cajones), Brit Oli Webb had this to say: “There was definitely more in there. And with better conditions, I know we could have gone faster, as I approached 331 mph, the Tuatara climbed almost 20mph within the last five seconds. The car wasn’t running out of steam yet. The crosswinds are all that prevented us from realising the car’s limit.”

Watching this film and processing the numbers it’s hard to imagine it ever being bettered. After all, it was 13 years ago that SSC stunned the automotive nobility when it set the production car speed record by hitting 255, taking the title from Bugatti with the added validation of Guinness. Now, thanks to being a production vehicle, having a two-way average, being on the public road, and having certified GPS data and two world-record sanctioned witnesses on site while running street tyres and non-race fuel, they’ve won again: fair and square.

“It’s been ten years since we held this record with our first car, the Ultimate Aero, and the Tuatara is leagues ahead. Its performance reflects the dedication and focus with which we pursued this achievement,” said Jerod Shelby, CEO of SSC. “We came pretty close to meeting the theoretical numbers, which is astonishing to do in a real world setting on a public road.

“America’s new claim to victory in the ‘land-based space race’ is going to be tough to beat,” he added.

SSC might well have just put the full stop at the end of the hypercar speed equation, but in a market were fastest is best and egos are big, we’re sure it won’t be taken lying down. We may need a bigger planet. Your move Bugatti, Koenigsegg, Hennessey…
