This isn’t just a top-of-the-range BMW. The company has only used ‘CSL’ three times in its entire history.
The CSL badge matters, and it’s reserved for deeply special cars...
The last few hardcore M cars haven’t been deemed worthy, but now BMW says the time is right for the successor to the CSL dynasty.
A road car, not a track car like the recent GTS models: this is supposed to be less about lap times, and more about thrills.
A 50th anniversary birthday present to the M Division, and potentially a last hurrah for the M car as we know it, before electrification invades for good.
The figures are impressive: 542bhp from a 3.0-litre 6cyl turbo makes the M4 CSL capable of 0-60mph 3.7 sec with a top speed of 190mph.
But how will it perform compared to CSLs of the past, and can it live up to the badge?

With the epic £500k Autobahn road trip successfully navigated, its now time to see what these Speed Week contenders are like on track.
And where better than Autodrom Most? A circuit located in the western end of the Czech Republic only about 30 miles from the German border, where the love of racing runs deep. The corners are numbered, not named. Less evocative. It’s harder to express fear and trepidation when reverentially whispering about turns 4 and 19, rather than some mythically titled bend such as Pouhon or Paddock Hill. But ultra fast, ‘are they really flat?’ 4 and 19 are a genuine test of mettle and metal.
Watch the Top Gear Magazine team navigate 4,212 metres of sublime track in the Aston Martin DBX 707, Audi RS3, BMW M4 CSL, Ferrari 296 GTB, Maserati MC20, Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica, McLaren Elva, Morgan Super 3, Porsche Cayman GT4 RS and the Praga R1, (deep breath) in an attempt to crown the ultimate performance car of 2022.

BMW M4 CSL participa en la batalla de circuito de coches de mejor rendimiento de Top Gear

Cada año, cada publicación automotriz presenta su propia versión de los premios al auto del año. Todos tienen sus propios nombres únicos, sus propias ideas únicas y su propia colección de autos. Pero casi todos son lo mismo. El de Top Gear se llama Best Performance Car y tiene dos componentes, la carretera y la pista. Este video es la parte de la pista, en la que TG llevó una tonelada de autos sobresalientes al Autodrome Most, en la República Checa. Uno de los coches era el BMW M4 CSL .


Por supuesto, también había otros coches. El Lamborghini Huracan Technica, el Maserati MC20, el Porsche Cayman GT4 RS, el McLaren Elva, el Ferrari 296 GTB y el Audi RS3 también estuvieron presentes, solo por nombrar algunos. Parece una dura competencia para el M4 CSL, especialmente en la pista donde las caídas en carretera de los superdeportivos no tienen sentido. En la pista, donde se puede perdonar la falta de comodidad o practicidad de un superdeportivo, el M4 CSL debe ser especialmente bueno.




Entonces, ¿qué pensaron del M4 CSL? Bueno, cada automóvil solo obtuvo un pequeño desenfoque del tiempo de pantalla pero, durante los pocos momentos que lo tuvo, el M4 CSL fue llamado una cosa: pesado. El M4 CSL no es exactamente un auto porky, inclinando la balanza a alrededor de 3,600 lbs. Sin embargo, es más pesado que muchos de los autos en su punto de precio y, lo que es más importante, que muchos de los autos de la competencia de Top Gear. Habiendo conducido el M4 CSL yo mismo, puedo decir que ciertamente no se siente como si estuviera a la altura de la parte "ligera" de su nombre. Sin embargo, es tan rápido y tan capaz que realmente no me di cuenta en el camino.



Será interesante ver cómo se desempeña el M4 CSL, en relación con sus competidores, una vez que se publiquen los resultados. El BMW M4 CSL tiene mucho a su favor: es absurdamente rápido, tiene un agarre mecánico increíble y sus neumáticos Michelin Cup 2 R son implacables. Sin embargo, es un poco demasiado pesado, roza lo miserable de conducir en la carretera y tiene el mismo precio que los autos como el Cayman GT4 RS. Entonces, ¿puede realmente pasar el rato con los grandes establecidos, los autos que ya conocemos y amamos? El rendimiento sobre el papel solo llega hasta cierto punto, un automóvil debe ser atractivo y divertido para ser un automóvil de gran rendimiento y no estoy tan seguro de que Top Gear piense que el M4 CSL es ninguna de esas cosas.
