2022 BMW X8 Leaves Hideout To Test Its Plug-in Hybrid Powertrain

BMW’s bold new design language has sparked debates among its fan base, and just when we thought we’ve seen it all, like the bucktooth grille on the 4-Series, M3 and M4, and the ‘Ok Boomer’ iX electric SUV, in comes the X8 with an even bolder styling.
The nameplate suggests a bigger alternative to the X6, sharing the underpinnings and most (if not all) of the powertrains with the regular X7. However, as it turns out, the roofline is actually less sloping than on its smaller sibling (and on the X4), and if anything, it looks to have been inspired by the X2.
The front end will mirror the looks of the 2022 X7, with the headlamps that have moved further down and the grille that sits closer to the bonnet. The rear fascia, however, represents a significant departure from other BMW SUVs, and even the horizontally-mounted taillights with a rounded design on each side of the tailgate look different. The fake exhaust trim is incorporated into the diffuser, whereas the actual tailpipes appear to blow hot air from behind the fake metal trim on each side of the bumper.

As highlighted by the mandatory ‘Hybrid Test Vehicle’ stickers and the charging port on the left front fender, this is a plug-in hybrid version of the X8, yet it is impossible to tell what powertrain it employs. Still, we might be looking at the M45e grade, believed to develop in excess of 388 HP and 443 lb-ft (600 Nm) of torque, which is the official rating of the X5 xDrive45e.
The lineup might be topped by the full-blown M version, as BMW has already registered the X8 M moniker. If it gets the official blessing of the board, then it might arrive with a rear-biased all-wheel-drive system and up to 750-horsepower available on tap.
While the regular X8 might debut next year, with sales commencing in the second half, the rumored X8 M could follow it in 2022.

BMW will add another member to its SUV line-up next year with the arrival of the X8, a more style-driven counterpart to the full-size X7. As with that model, it will challenge cars such as the Mercedes GLS, Audi Q8 and Range Rover.
BMW has owned the X8 trademark for a number of years, and the car’s launch will see the company’s range of X-badged SUVs expand to 10 models in total.
Under the skin, the BMW X8 shares its running gear with the X7. In common with other even-numbered BMW SUVs, such as the X4 and X6, the flagship X8 will be a coupe-inspired model, but aimed primarily at markets such as China and the US.
As our spy shots and exclusive images reveal, it will be more rakish than the X7, but the X8 won’t go down the full coupe-SUV route. It will retain an upright profile, but there will be a number of design changes in the surfacing of the bodywork. It will be similar in concept to the Audi Q8, which uses the same running gear and nose as the Q7, but has its own design from the A-pillars back.
The X8’s upright front end will feature the X7’s huge kidney grilles, but they will be flanked by split-level LED headlights – a design theme that will be seen on other new and next-generation range-topping BMWs, such as the soon-to-be-facelifted X7 and the new 7 Series limousine, due in 2022.
Elsewhere, the tough-looking and imposing design of the X7 will give way slightly to sportier sweeps and touches. At the rear there are far more pronounced wheelarch lines, and a back bumper that’s home to two oversized exhausts.
We haven’t caught sight of the X8’s interior, but it’s likely to be less of a departure than the exterior and use the same advanced design and technology as the X7. Dual 12.3-inch displays up front will appear with BMW’s latest iDrive infotainment system. With BMW resisting the urge to make the X8 a true coupé-SUV, the more upright rear end could still be home to a third row of seats, making it a sportier, but slightly less spacious alternative to the X7.

The X8’s focus as a sportier alternative to the X7 is hinted at by further trademark activity. Although BMW’s M division hasn’t touched the X7, a filing for an X8 M has been spotted among other BMW applications. Such a model would more than likely use the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 fitted in the BMW X5 M Competition. In that car it develops 616bhp, which can propel the X5 M from 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds. Similar power and performance would see the X8 M compete with models such as the Porsche Cayenne Coupe Turbo.
Plug-in hybrid power has yet to appear in the X7, but our spy shots suggest that the X8 could introduce an electrified powertrain to the top end of BMW’s SUV line-up. Test mules have been spied wearing ‘hybrid test vehicle’ stickers.

BMW took a couple of prototypes of the X8 to the Nurburgring for some fine-tuning, but they did find themselves in a messy situation.
According to our spy photographers, one of the testers experienced some technical issues and broke down. Unfortunately, they couldn’t get close enough to snap a few pics of it, yet they did add that the prototypes could only lap the German racetrack two or three times before having to cool down.
The last thing BMW needs is to recall the entire X8 population shortly after launch, so the rumored arrival of the big SUV in the second half of the year could have been postponed to early 2022. This seems even more plausible when looking at the latest spotted prototypes, which look the same, (controversial front end included) as our previous sighting, despite being separated by almost six months.
As per the ‘Hybrid Test Vehicle’ stickers, this is an electrified version of the 2023 X8. It has a charging port on the left front fender, meaning that it hides a plug-in hybrid powertrain. It’s been reported that it might use the same set-up as the X5 xDrive45e, with 388 HP and 443 lb-ft (600 Nm) of torque, under the X8 M45e designation.
A full-blown M variant remains a viable possibility, considering that BMW has already secured the X8 M nameplate. If they give it the go-ahead, then it should launch around one year after the regular X8 models, presumably with up to 750 HP.

Prototipo BMW X8 / XM con tubos de escape apilados detectados

It seems like the stacked tailpipes we’ve seen a while back on a BMW X8 or BMW XM (whichever name BMW decides to go with in the end) are here to stay. A new sighting of a prototype doing some heavy testing in Germany shows the same design on the rear end, which might indicate that the bespoke model will have that feature on it once it enters production.
The BMW XM is the first ever bespoke project from the M division, according to our sources. While initially is was supposed to be named BMW X8, the new name being floated around is XM.Of course, a lot of us would’ve preferred to see a bespoke M car in the shape of a sedan or a coupe, but the times we live in are challenging, as people are simply more interested in SUVs. This one is also supposed to become the most powerful car BMW has ever made. According to our info, it will use a hybrid setup, made of a V8, combined with electric power. The total output is supposed to be over 700 HP, probably closer to 750.
As for the rest of the car, the design is still a great mystery, sans maybe the stacked tailpipes at the back. If the split headlight trend is confirmed, chances are this car will get them too. The suspension is also supposed to be out of this world, since the guys from BMW M will want to keep this huge SUV in check in the corners while also offering a supple ride in almost every other situation. Fiabilidad hace décadas que los coches de BMW an dejado de tenerla , algo más con carácter deportivo que los Mercedes si siguen teniendo , aunque creo que solo en apariencia creo
