Lamborghini SVJ v McLaren 720 v 911 Turbo S: DRAG RACE

25 jun 2022

"Supercar drag races don’t get much better than this!
We’ve brought together a Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, a Porsche 911 Turbo S & a McLaren 720S to go head-to-head over the quarter-mile!
So let’s check out the stats. Starting with the ever-reliable Porsche, it’s powered by a 3.8-litre twin-turbo flat-six that can put down 650hp & 800Nm of torque.
It’s equipped with all wheel drive and tips the scales at 1,640kg.
As for the SVJ, it’s lighter than the Porsche, at 1,525kg.
It’s also up on power, with a 6.5-litre V12 that’s good for 770hp and 690Nm! But will it launch as well as the Porsche?
Then finally we have the lightest car in the line-up, the McLaren 720S. It only weighs in at 1,420kg, and it’s packing a 4-litre twin-turbo V8 that can put down an amazing 720hp & 770Nm!
It’s got one key weakness though - it’s only equipped with RWD! Will that prove the difference?
There’s only one way to find out - LET’S RACE!"

Watch A Ford GT Somehow Outsprint A Lamborghini Aventador SVJ On Top Gear America

The Lamborghini Aventador may be on its final legs but in potent SVJ guise, it remains one of the quickest production cars in existence. However, not even that was able to help it when competing against a Ford GT in a drag race.

Top Gear America recently returned to MotorTrend+ for a new season and in the season premiere, the two mid-engined supercars were lined up for a head-to-head drag race. The result is quite surprising.

On paper, the Aventador SVJ has all the advantages over the GT. Most notably, its 6.5-liter naturally-aspirated V12 engine pumps out 759 hp at 8,500 rpm and 531 lb-ft (720 Nm) of torque at 6,750 rpm. The GT is no slouch but its 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 is capped at 660 hp and 550 lb-ft (746 Nm), putting it at a significant disadvantage to the Italian supercar.

What’s more, the Lamborghini also has the advantage of being all-wheel drive while the GT sends all of its power to the rear wheels. Both cars are nearly identical when it comes to weight, each tipping the scales at a touch over 1,500 kg (3,306 lbs).

It is safe to say that the driver of the Lamborghini botched the launch. While he does appear to have used the car’s launch control system, it experiences heaps of wheelspin off the line, forcing him to aggressive countersteer to keep it in a straight line. By comparison, the Ford doesn’t appear to have encountered any traction issues despite being rear-wheel drive and the race being conducted on a very dirty and dusty piece of tarmac.
