Chris Harris Introduces the Ultimate Air-Cooled 911. Porsche 993 GT2, now live for bids!

Collecting Cars

Among Porsche connoisseurs, there is one modern 911 that stands out as the pinnacle of the air-cooled bloodline: the 993 GT2. Built to homologate the car for FIA GT Championship racing, just 172 road-going versions of the GT2 were made, with only 44 in left-hand drive. It is one such car that is the latest premium offering on the Collecting Cars platform.
With such limited numbers built, these homologation specials found homes in Porsche collections around the world. This car was ordered by its first owner in Japan, finished in the rare factory hue of Arctic Silver Metallic, and equipped with hard-shell sport seats, air conditioning, electric windows, and radio preparation - making it a car as well suited to long-distance road trips as track driving.
It remained in Japan for 18 years, before spending time in the care of a single owner in the US, and more recently having been imported to the UK and registered to the current keeper. Since arriving in the UK, a GT1 steering wheel has been fitted, and its original sport seats have been removed and carefully stored, with a set of brand-new Recaro Pole Position bucket seats fitted instead - but trimmed in the same colour scheme as the original upholstery. Of course, the original seats and steering wheel are included in the sale, along with all of the factory tools and accessories - even the unused Porsche-branded mechanic’s gloves. The odometer shows just 42,920 Km (26,670 miles) from new.
This particular Porsche 993 GT2 retains its matching-numbers engine: an incredible twin-turbocharged 3.6-litre flat-six, producing up to 430hp and 432lb-ft of torque, coupled to the original six-speed manual transmission. While today’s supercars might boast power figures twice that high, the GT2 is incredibly light by modern standards, tipping the scales at just shy of 1300kg. That means it can rocket from 0-60mph in just 3.9 seconds, and on to a top speed of 187mph.
A pre-purchase inspection for the current owner by Porsche specialist Neil Bainbridge suggested that the car retains its original body panels, while the Arctic Silver paint is also thought to be the factory finish. Bainbridge’s workshop also carried out a major service in November 2020, renewing the engine gaskets and turbocharger heat shields, clutch release bearing, replacing the tappets and resetting the cam timing, followed by a full geometry check and adjustment. As you would expect, the car now drives and handles superbly, ready to thrill on the road or track.
The Porsche 993 GT2 is an exceptionally rare and truly iconic 911: a homologation special with prodigious performance and incredible road presence. This particular car is in excellent condition with very low mileage, complete with its matching-numbers engine and gearbox, and believed to retain its factory body panels and paint. With just 57 road cars built, it is certain to grab the attention of discerning Porsche collectors around the world, representing an unmissable opportunity to acquire perhaps the most highly prized air-cooled 911 of all.
The launch of the Porsche 993 GT2 on Collecting Cars marks the latest of the ‘CC R’ premium video offerings on the platform, producing an immersive short film that showcases this incredible homologation special, with an introduction by Chris Harris / @Chris Harris on Cars . This premium video offering is available to other sellers, who can discuss this with the Consignment Team at Collecting Cars.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • This 993 GT2 was ordered by its first owner in Japan, specified from the factory in the rare Arctic Silver Metallic hue. They also chose the hard-shell Sport seats, trimmed in black leatherette with grey inlays, and with anthracite seat backs.
  • Its factory options included air conditioning, radio preparation, electric windows, and the more powerful battery.
  • Since arriving in the UK, its factory Sport seats have been replaced with brand-new Recaro Pole Position bucket seats trimmed in black and grey leather to match the original style, with red shells to match the GT2’s original red seat belts and red fabric door pulls. The original seats are included in the sale.
  • Likewise, while the original four-spoke airbag steering wheel is safely stored and comes with the car, a non-airbag Porsche GT1 steering wheel is currently fitted.
  • It will also come with the tool roll, lightweight jack, air compressor, unused Porsche-branded mechanic’s gloves, warning triangle, space-saver spare wheel, Porsche tyre pressure gauge, and the first aid kit.
  • Accompanying the car is the original driver’s manual and leather pouch, plus a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, the Porsche Central Service System record, and extensive paperwork documenting 17 services that cover its time in Japan, the US and the UK. There are also two sets of keys with alarm/immobiliser fobs.
Factory options:

  • Equipment for Japan
  • Higher amperage battery
  • Sport seats - L/R
  • Prepared for radio
  • Airbags - L/R
  • Green graduated tint windscreen
  • Air conditioning
  • Electric windows
  • Michelin tyres

CONDITION

  • There is no known prior bodywork damage. Based on a pre-purchase inspection carried out by Neil Bainbridge of BS Motorsport, the panels are believed to be all original.
  • Its Arctic Silver Metallic paintwork is also thought to be original, and is presented in generally excellent condition. There are a few minor stone chips on the bonnet and front end, and some paint bubbles on the rear wing above the intakes for the intercooler - and the seller understands this is not unusual given the proximity to heat.
  • The full car is covered in paint protection film (PPF).
  • Inside, the Recaro Pole Position seat upholstery is in superb order, with no wear or damage. The dashboard, lightweight door panels, and original carpets are also in great shape, commensurate with the low mileage. Its original Sport seats have some minor creasing in the leatherette, but again remain in excellent overall condition.
  • There are no electrical faults, and all of the switchgear works as it should.
  • The first UK MOT test was on 14 June 2021 at 42,877 km, which resulted in a first-time pass with no advisories or defects whatsoever.
SERVICE HISTORY

  • The last scheduled maintenance was in November 2020 at 42,601 km (26,471 miles). This comprised a major service at Neil Bainbridge / BS Motorsport in Aylesbury, including an engine oil and filter change, renewal of engine gaskets and turbocharger heat shields, a new fuel filter, air filter, pollen filter, and spark plugs; a new distributor cap and rotor arm, timing chain blade, clutch breather pipe and release bearing, plus replacement of the tappets and reset cam timing, and a flat floor geometry check and adjustment.
  • Four new N4-rated Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tyres were fitted in July 2020, and the strut top joints were replaced by Neil Bainbridge / BS Motorsport in June 2020.
  • In June 2019 at 42,219 km (26,234 miles), Porsche specialist Black Forest Automotive in San Diego carried out a compression check, as well as an oil and filter service, attended to a faulty horn, and also reverted aftermarket silencers back to the original specification.

Porsche 993 GT2 review. Is this road racer special the ultimate air-cooled 911 turbo?

22 ago 2021

Harry's garage

The Porsche 911 GT (better known as the 993 GT2) will always be one of the most coveted 911 of all. Built in very limited numbers mainly for homologation reasons, it went on to dominate the FIA GT2 class during the late nineties. Only 7 RHD examples were ordered in the UK and this is one of them.
