2020 Skoda Octavia Looks Sleek, Inadvertently Leaked by German Configurator
21 Oct 2019, 9:44 UTC ·
We’re days away from the grand reveal of the all-new Octavia, the most important passenger car Skoda sells in Europe since the Volkswagen Group took over control of the Czech automaker. The grainy screenshot comes from the German configurator for the Octavia, and as you can tell, the designers modified the C-pillars and roofline to create a sportier profile.
November 11th is the day Skoda will reveal the fourth generation of the liftback sedan, and the exterior styling certainly levels up the visual appeal of the Golf-based model. A station wagon will also be available for family-oriented customers who don’t feel prepared to make the switch to the Karoq crossover, featuring similar engine-transmission options to the sedan.
While on the subject of all things oily bits, the next evolution of the MQB vehicle architecture will introduce mild hybridization to the 2.0 TDI four-cylinder turbo diesel. In the Golf Mk. 8 and Audi A4, the Volkswagen Group has confirmed the EA288 Evo is assisted by a 12-volt belt starter/generator and a lithium-ion battery. Outputs for this engine range from 136 to 204 PS.
That’s 134 to 210 horsepower, and of course, all-wheel drive will be available as an optional extra depending on the engine’s specification and trim level. A 1.5-liter TSI and the 2.0 TSI are also certain to make the cut, but there’s still a bit of mystery surrounding the 1.0 TSI as the entry-level engine.
A plug-in hybrid is expected as well, borrowing the eco-friendly powertrain from the next-generation Golf in GTE flavor. What is most surprising about the Octavia IV is the decision to drop the split headlights, a design which is far better suited to Mercedes-Benz models from the early 2000s.
The Scala-inspired LED headlights of the fourth generation flank the automaker’s new corporate grille, wider than the previous design and complemented by a thick surround finished in chrome. The Octavia RS (a.k.a. vRS in the United Kingdom) as well as the Dynamic+ Appearance Package drop the shiny garnish for an all-black grille.
