Se supone que un criterio ingenieril es a simplicidad. Un espejo físico es mucho más sencillo que poner una cámara ahí así que
no veo por qué habría que implementar una solución más costosa y problemática.

Una cámara es capaz de darte mucha más información que un simple espejo, desde detección de obstáculos/peligros hasta distancias aproximadas, la imagen que recibes siempre puede ser tratada, por ejemplo en caso de sobreexposición, o si es nocturna mostrarte detalles que no serias capaz de ver con un espejo y asi muchas otras cosas, sin contar como han dicho antes las flexibilidad de donde se te muestra la información en vez de tener que girar la cabeza... y justo eso es lo que más me sorprende de este concepto para mal, que coloquen las pantallas en una posición donde el conductor tiene que agachar y girar la cabeza en vez de mostrarlo en el cuadro de mandos principal.

Colocada en ese sitio en la puerta , como que tienes que apartar un poco la vista de la carretera , ya puestos ,coloquela por la parte teasera del reposacabezas que se lleva menos golpes

Lexus Beats Audi And Becomes First To Put Digital Side-View Cameras Into Production

For years now – decades even – we’ve been seeing conceptcars replacing conventional side-view mirrors with digital cameras, only to ditch them on the road to production. But no more, as far as Lexus is concerned.

In what it claims as a world-first, Toyota’s luxury brand is installing new Digital Outer Mirrors on its vehicles, starting with the new ES sedan. And as you might expect, they offer a number of advantages over their “analog” counterparts.

For starters, they reduce drag, which can mean better fuel economy and performance, and less wind noise. They’ll accumulate less snow and rain too, and automatically (or manually) enhance the view to the side and rear of the vehicle when changing lanes or reversing – all of which sounds great to us.



The system employs a set of cameras mounted where the mirrors would be, and displays the footage on 5-inch monitors at the interior base of the A-pillars. It’s a technology similar to what Audi has developed for the new E-Tron. But Lexus claims it’s beating Ingolstadt to the punch by rolling it out next month already.

The system will be offered initially on the ES starting in October, before making its way onto other models. But for the time being, the Digital Outer Mirrors will only be offered in Japan, which approved the technology a couple of years ago already.

It may yet take some time for the technology to be approved for other markets – especially in the United States, where regulations governing such visibility technologies are among the strictest. Here’s hoping regulators see the benefits as clearly as Lexus does, and approve the technology for use around the world.

Mas feo no puede ser lo de Lexus... parece un par te TomTom de hace años ahi apoyados. Por otro lado la posición de las cámaras las quizá las podían modificar para mejorar la aerodinámica, mantener el “brazo” del retrovisor me parece innecesario considerando el tamaño de una cámara y que puede ser orientada.

Hay una serie de elementos que llevan muchos años sin evolucionar nada, los retrovisores con su espejito o los limpiaparabrisas de goma.....algún día las cosas cambian

Lexus’ new Digital Outer Mirrors system was first introduced in September this year with the new generation ES sedan and is becoming available for the 2019 ES that is now finally on sale in Japan. This makes the vehicle the first production model in the history of the automotive industry to be offered with digital side mirrors instead of traditional mirrors.


Lexus ES Gets Rearview Cameras To Replace Mirrors, They Look Amazing
As of now, different regulations make it possible to order the new system only in Japan, because it’s virtually illegal in all other parts of the world. The Digital Outer Mirrors uses two exterior cameras mounted on the front doors which transmit images to two square-shaped, five-inch displays on each side of the cabin. The automaker claims that replacing the larger traditional mirrors with cameras improves outward visibility and lowers wind noise.

The system is one of many new cool tech features available for the ES, including the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control in combination with Lane Tracing Assist, Road Side Assist, Parking Support Brake System, and Panoramic View Monitor. All these systems use an array of cameras, sensors, and radars to control the vehicle’s behavior under different conditions.





Aside from its optional digital side mirrors, the ES is virtually identical to the U.S. and European versions revealed earlier this year. In its home market, the sedan based on the Toyota New Global Architecture will be powered exclusively by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybridized powertrain sending power to the front wheels. The ES 300h will be offered as a standard model, an L version, or a sportier F Sport variant.

Audi delays E-Tron SUV by a month over software updates
Its vision for the future will have to wait a little longer.

E-Tron SUV has seemingly been in development for ages, but you're going to have to wait longer still to see it on the road. The automaker has delayed the electric SUV's arrival by four weeks due a "software development issue," a spokesman told Reuters. Changes to an unnamed piece of software required that Audi ask for new security clearance. It's not a dramatic delay given that the E-Tron wasn't supposed to hit dealerships until the second quarter of 2019, but it's not doing any favors to Audi or early adopters. However, it could have been worse.

The response came after a Bild am Sonntag report (subscription required) broke word of the delay. Its sources claimed that the software problems could delay the E-Tron's debut by several months -- a big problem when Audi is trying to preempt the launch of Mercedes' EQC.

These might not be the only challenges, though. That same Bild piece claimed that Audi was embroiled in negotiations with LG Chem over the E-Tron's battery prices. LG reportedly wants to raise prices by 10 percent due to high demand, potentially affecting the EV's final sticker. Neither company would comment on the price dispute, but it could create further complications if it's accurate and there's an impasse.

Audi dealerships won’t keep the electric e-tron SUV in inventory, here’s why it’s the wrong move

Audi has put a lot of money behind the launch of its first next-gen electric vehicle, the e-tron, but its dealerships won’t have to invest as much.

The German automaker confirmed that its U.S. dealers won’t keep the electric e-tron SUV in inventory.

Audi of America President Scott Keogh reportedly confirmed to Automotive News that dealers will not carry the e-tron.

The goal aims to reduce costs. Keogh said:

“I think it would be a beautiful world if you can go to a dealer — and we’d like to find that beautiful world — with zero floorplan [expense] and proper, full gross on the car. This would be a beautiful state; so let’s go see if we can find this dream state.”

Instead, Audi is going the custom order route, much like Tesla – though the California-based automaker has increasingly been transitioning to holding more inventory in recent years.

Audi has already started taking reservations with a $1,000 deposit.

Electrek’s Take

This is something that has been a problem with electric vehicle adoption for a long time.

Car dealers try to push vehicles that they have in inventory, which most often than not are gas-powered cars.

It’s also partly why Tesla decided to go with a direct sales business model so that their vehicles wouldn’t have to compete for the attention of salespeople at third-party dealerships.

I think this is a bad move by Audi.

That, plus the fact that they have been targeting current electric vehicle owners instead of trying to expand the EV market, makes it look like they are being extremely tentative in their approach.

I’ve been saying it for a while now, if legacy automakers really want to get into the EV space, all they have to do is create the best electric vehicle they can make and incentivize dealerships to sell them like any other car.

Make sure they are available and ready for test drives and salespeople know about the local incentives, the local charging infrastructure, and the advantages of driving electric.

Instead, Audi is organizing marketing events at Electrify America charging stations to market to existing EV owners and now they won’t even sell inventory vehicles to dealerships?

It looks to me like Audi is taking the easy approach here, which is in contrast with the way they launched the e-tron at a huge event and with an ad campaign.
