BMW TSB # SI B 12 19 08 Engine Electrical Systems
SUBJECT: S85 - Power Reduction with Idle Actuator Faults Stored
MODEL: E60 M5 from SOP up to 3/08
E63, E64 M6 from SOP up to 3/08
SITUATION: The Service Engine Soon light (MIL) is illuminated. The engine power reduction mode is activated with any of the following idle actuator (LLS) faults stored:
2B0E: idle actuator, monitoring bank 2
2B0D: idle actuator, monitoring bank 1
2B23: idle actuator, governor monitoring, bank 1
2B24: idle actuator, governor monitoring, bank 2
CAUSE: Certain engine operating conditions could lead to overheating of the idle actuator (LLS) motor electrical components.
If the engine is operated at low load conditions with the idle actuator open and the throttle valves positioned at less that 10% (constant-speed highway driving, for example), the idle actuators could fault.
When the idle actuators (LLS) remain steady in the open positive during this type of driving, it is possible that the contracts on the LLS motor commutator may begin to degrade and cause operational faults.
CORRECTION: The DME software has been improved to include a "wiping function" of the LLS, beginning at a 3% throttle opening. This functional change in the LLS control will help maintain the electrical integrity of the internal motor contacts.
On a customer complaint basis only, reprogram the vehicle with the latest version of Progman.
This DME software improvement is included with integration level E060-08-03-500 and higher.
In the event that one of the idle actuators continues to fault after the DME programming, it will then be necessary to replace it.
