When we last saw our Ford Shelby GT500 in a drag race, it got left in the dust behind our Tesla Model Y Performance. Given the Tesla's all-wheel-drive traction and immediate power delivery, that may have been an unfair pairing. This time we've attempted to even out the playing field by bringing a 2021 BMW M4 Competition. In this video, Carlos Lago and Kurt Niebuhr from Edmunds jump into these high-performance vehicles to see which one has the quickest acceleration and 0-60 time. This is a drag race of the Ford Shelby GT500 vs BMW M4 Competition.
The 2020 Ford Shelby GT500 is a muscle car through and through. A supercharged V8 engine routes a whopping 760 horsepower through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission to the two rear wheels. The redesigned 2021 BMW M4 Competition is a fast and powerful luxury sport coupe. Under the hood, the M4 packs some serious punch. Last month I was kindly invited down to London by BMW to shoot their new BMW M4 Competition in Brooklyn Grey.
This shoot was for a campaign with New York BMW in Manhattan, so we had to find New York/ American Style locations to suit the theme.

Here's my POV of the shoot in London, it was just as we were coming out of lockdown so was fairly quiet considering I was shooting in the centre of London.
I have added photos to the video for each location as I shot them and I have also included two short cinematic sections in the video, because of course what would a POV video of mine be without a nice cinematic. (I'll time stamp them here: 4:15 and 12:57) I absolutely loved this shoot, and from originally getting the message from BMW asking me to come down to London was so exciting and such a rewarding moment!
I feel proud as I have only just gone freelance to being asked by BMW to shoot their brand new cars, an incredible achievement.

El fabricante alemán de neumáticos Continental anunció hoy que el G82 M4 Coupé vendrá equipado de fábrica con neumáticos Continental SportContact 6. Las nuevas gomas están diseñadas para ofrecer al BMW M4 un mejor manejo, precisión de conducción y estabilidad mejorada a alta velocidad. Los propietarios de un BMW M4 tendrán una opción entre los tamaños de rueda de 18 y 19 pulgadas opcionales. Continental ha recibido aprobaciones globales para los dos tamaños y ofrecerá los neumáticos SportContact 6 en dos dimensiones, 275/40 ZR18 (103Y) XL y 285/35 ZR19 (103Y) XL.

“Como el único punto de contacto entre el vehículo y la carretera, los neumáticos juegan un papel esencial para brindar una experiencia de conducción óptima sin concesiones”, dijo el Dr. Holger Lange, jefe de desarrollo de neumáticos para el negocio de equipos originales de Continental. “Nuestros ingenieros desarrollan neumáticos OE que se adaptan perfectamente al modelo de vehículo respectivo y, por lo tanto, respaldan de manera óptima el rendimiento del automóvil. The new BMW M4 Coupe gets a new OEM tire. German tire maker Continental announced today that the G82 M4 Coupe will come factory-fitted with Continental SportContact 6 tires. The new rubbers are designed to offer the BMW M4 better handling, driving precision, and improved high-speed stability. BMW M4 owners will have an option between 18 and optional 19-inch wheel sizes. Continental has received global approvals for the two sizes and will offer the SportContact 6 tires in two dimensions, 275/40 ZR18 (103Y) XL and 285/35 ZR19 (103Y) XL.

“As the only point of contact between the vehicle and the road, tires play an essential role in providing an optimal driving experience without compromise,” said Dr. Holger Lange, head of tire development for Continental’s original equipment business. “Our engineers develop OE tires that perfectly match the respective vehicle model and thus optimally support the car’s performance. To capture the specific requirements, Continental works closely with vehicle manufacturers on tire development.”

In addition, Continental says that the SportContact 6 tire has been rated best in the EU tire label in the wet grip category, meaning that it is particularly convincing in terms of braking performance on wet roads.

The new BMW M3 G80 and M2 G82 have four tire providers: Michelin, Pirelli, Yokohama and Continental with sizes ranging from 18 to 21 inches. For the new generation M3/M4, BMW also drastically changed the tire sizes from front to rear. So the front tires get a smaller wheel with a taller sidewall and narrower size. The taller sidewall is most important, as it provides a better balance between comfort and grip. However, at the back, the tires are wider, have shorter sidewalls and sit on larger wheels. The reason for that is to provide better lateral grip, or “oblique running stiffness” as BMW calls it.

There’s also an option for track tires, a first for the standard BMW M3 and M4. Previously, the only M cars to be available with genuine track tires were the M3/M4 CS, M4 GTS and M2 CS. Now, though, your run of the mill M3 can have them.

The new BMW M3 G80 and M2 G82 have four tire providers: Michelin, Pirelli, Yokohama and Continental with sizes ranging from 18 to 21 inches. For the new generation M3/M4, BMW also drastically changed the tire sizes from front to rear. So the front tires get a smaller wheel with a taller sidewall and narrower size. The taller sidewall is most important, as it provides a better balance between comfort and grip. However, at the back, the tires are wider, have shorter sidewalls and sit on larger wheels. The reason for that is to provide better lateral grip, or “oblique running stiffness” as BMW calls it.

Both sets of tires are in the same 275/35 R19 front and 285/30 R20 rear sizes, both are made by Michelin, the differences is that the * marked set have had 2.5 years of development with BMW to make it the perfect tyre for the G80 M3.

Hello guys, welcome back to Car Obsession, and welcome, to the new BMW M3, the car that has divided opinion.
Not because of the way how it drives, but on the way it looks, thanks to the two large controversial grills that take centre stage at the front of the car.
Also making an important appearance at the front end is the 3.0 litre straight six engine which is more powerful than the last M3. Offering 510hp and 650Nm of torque, it has improved by 60hp and 100Nm.
This power is fed to the rear wheels via an 8-speed Steptronic, although there is now all the choice of having an xDrive version, meaning it has all wheel drive. 0-62 is done is just 3.9 seconds, and the top speed is limited to 155mph, although if you pay BMW enough money, that can be increased to 180. I had a quick spin in one to see what's what.

Mientras que los clientes estadounidenses todavía esperan sus M3 y M4 con tracción total, los clientes europeos tienen un poco más de suerte. Las entregas del primer xDrive M3 / M4 comenzaron el mes pasado y ahora es el momento de analizar su rendimiento. ¿Cómo funciona el sistema M xDrive?

While U.S. customers are still waiting for their all-wheel drive M3s and M4s, European customers are a bit luckier. Deliveries of the first ever xDrive M3/M4 started last month and it’s now time to look at their performance. According to an M4 xDrive owner from Scotland, the G82 Coupe reached 60 mph in 3.07 seconds. The car was tested with one passenger onboard and about 25 percent of gasoline in the tank. DSC was off and the M4 runs on Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires.

How Does The M xDrive System Work?

The BMW M xDrive systems in the new M3 and M4 works very similarly to how it works in the M5. There are three modes; 4WD, 4WD Sport, and 2WD, just as there are in the M5 and M8. In normal driving conditions, even in the default 4WD mode, all of the engine’s available torque is sent to the rear wheels. Only once the need for more grip arises will the front wheels get any of the car’s torque and, once that happens, power is still delivered in a rear-biased fashion. Though, in the default 4WD mode, the xDrive system is more liberal with its front axle power delivery.

Switch to 4WD Sport mode and the front axle really just becomes more of a rear axle aid. The xDrive system becomes more aggressive and is more willing to let the car slide but will deploy the front axle to save your ass and keep the car from getting too out of control. While the 2WD mode is the more extreme mode, as it keeps the front axle disengaged until the driver switches the car back to either of the 4WD modes. However, DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) must be disabled entirely for 2WD mode to be used, so it’s recommended that it’s only used on track.

Only BMW M3 Competition and M4 Competition models will be available with xDrive. That said, M3 Comp and M4 Comp xDrive models will be the fastest versions of the M3 and M4 available, with both cars getting from 0-60 mph in a claimed 3.4 seconds.

The BMW M3 Competition xDrive starts at $76,900, while the M4 Competition xDrive starts at $78,800, with $995 destination fees added to both. Both cars will go on sale in the U.S. in August, 2021.

A finales del año pasado conocimos a las nuevas criaturas de BMW. Los BMW M3 y M4 Competition aterrizaron con el shock de sus nuevas parrillas de riñones verticales y detrás un arsenal alemán para la berlina y el coupé deportivos por excelencia.

Ambas carrocerías comparten una misma mecánica, y por primera vez en la historia la posibilidad de equipar los M3 y M4 con tracción integral xDrive. Ahora ya conocemos los precios de estas variantes que pretender ser aún más efectivas pero igual de deportivas.


Los primeros M3 y M4 con tracción integral ya tienen precio

Nunca antes había ocurrido así. Los clientes de los nuevos BMW M3 Competition y M4 Competition podrán elegir si quieren sus coches con tracción trasera como venía siendo costumbre o equipados con la tracción integral deportiva M xDrive.

Este sistema de tracción a las cuatro ruedas tiene preferencia por el eje posterior, pero además ofrece tres modos de comportamiento: por un lado podremos elegir el modo 4WD para garantizar la efectividad reduciendo al mínimo las pérdidas de tracción. Sería el funcionamiento normal.

A continuación hay otros dos modos que incrementan las sensaciones con el 4WD Sport ofreciendo un protagonismo vocacional por el eje trasero y permitiendo cierto baile sin perder rendimiento. Por último está el modo 2WD que desconecta por completo las ruedas delanteras dejándolos con el modo de tracción trasera tradicional.

Mientras tanto, estos tres modos se pueden combinar con el ajuste de 10 niveles del control de tracción dinámico. Para los más quemados se ofrece el M Drift Analyser, una especie de telemetría que mide la longitud y la calidad de cada derrape.

Por lo demás, ambos modelos mantienen una mecánica inalterada. Bajo el capó se esconde el mismo motor 3.0 M TwinPower Turbo de 510 CV y 650 Nm de par motor asociados a una transmisión automática M Steptronic de ocho relaciones.

A nivel de cifras puras esta mecánica supone un incremento de 60 CV sobre las cifras declaradas por los M3 y M4 anteriores, con unas prestaciones de 3,5 segundos para el 0-100 km/h (0,4 segundos menos que los homólogos de tracción trasera), 12,5 segundos para llegar a 200 km/h desde parado y 290 km/h de velocidad punta con el M Driver's Package.

Los precios de los BMW M3 Competition y M4 Competition básicos son de 111.200 y 113.200 euros respectivamente, pero para las variantes dotadas de tracción integral M xDrive habrá que pagar algo más. Concretamente serán 115.700 y 117.700 euros, o lo que es lo mismo, un sobreprecio de 4.500 euros en ambos casos.


Adicionalmente se ofrecerá la versión BMW M4 Competition Cabrio con tracción M xDrive por un precio de 123.200 euros. Esta carrocería no se ofrecerá con tracción trasera y exclusivamente con capota de lona en lugar de rígida como en la versión saliente.

BMW ha publicado los precios de los nuevos BMW M3 y M4 con tracción M xDrive, una novedad sin precedentes en la gama de modelos deportivos del fabricante alemán. Por primera vez en la historia, se podrá configurar un M3 y M4 con un sistema de tracción integral inteligente, además de la clásica tracción trasera.

La nueva generación del M3 y M4 fue presentada a finales del año pasado, aunque las primeras entregas empezaron a llegar en marzo en sus versiones más prestaciones M Competition, con motor de seis cilindros en línea, 3.0 litros y 510 CV. Ahora, la marca abre un nuevo capítulo en su historia, al introducir la tracción total, tanto en la berlina como en el coupé y cabrio.

BMW M3 y M4 M xDrive con tres niveles de conducción

El sistema de tracción total M xDrive permite a los nuevos M3 y M4 M Competition elegir entre tres niveles de conducción: 4WD para máxima precisión y dinamismo, sin pérdidas de tracción; el modo 4WD Sport, que traslada más par en el eje trasero para darle más protagonismo y conseguir un rendimiento óptimo; y el modo 2WD, que desconecta el control dinámico de estabilidad y dota al coche del carácter inconfundible de la propulsión trasera, transmitiendo toda la potencia al eje posterior.

El control dinámico de tracción M, DTC, puede ajustarse hasta en diez niveles y además se puede medir la longitud y calidad de un derrape a través de la funcionalidad del sistema M Drift Analyser.

Muy rápidos

Los nuevos BMW M3 Competition y BMW M4 Competition con tracción M xDrive ofrecen unas prestaciones realmente buenas. Aceleran de 0 a 100 km/h en 3,7 segundos, dos décimas más lento con tracción trasera (3,9 segundos). La versión con carrocería descapotable solo se comercializa con tracción M xDrive y, gracias a unos ajustes específicos y a la nueva capota de lona, alcanza los 100 km/h en 3,7 segundos.
