Obtaining secrets from the Check Control (E38)
The Check Control in the instrument cluster of the current BMW 5/7series hides some secrets. Here is the procedure how to unveil them and how to unlock the system to get access to all tests:
· Turn ignition to pos. II
· Push right button in the instrument cluster and keep it pushed. You will first see "Check Control OK", some seconds later you will see "Test Nr.01"
· Push the left button on the instrument cluster to see the car's identification number. Add the 5 digits together and write down that number, you will need it for unlocking all the functions. Example: DG23278 will lead to 2+3+2+7+8 = 22
· Push the right button until you see "Test Nr.19"
· Push left button until you see the number that is equal to the one you calculated above
· Push right button again
Now you will have unrestricted access to Test No.3-21. If you made an error in the procedure mentioned above, Test No.3-21 will only display Lock:ON
Most of the tests are self-explanatory:

Lo que hay que hacer, para el que no entienda el inglés, es más o menos lo que sigue.
Primero hay que desbloquear el ordenata:
- darle al contacto (con el coche arrancado y en marcha también se puede hacer sin problema).
- pulsar el botón derecho del cuadro durante unos 5 segundos seguidos. Saldrá el típico mensaje "check control ok", o el último que os haya salido, en mi caso a menudo sale que la batería de la llave está baja (a ver si la cambio de una p. vez).
- a los 5 segundos o así, el mensaje cambia a TEST NR.1. Si siego pulsando veces el botón derecho, van saliendo terst 2, 3, etc, pero al dar al izquiero para verlos pondrá LOCKED: ON en todos, o sea, bloqueado. Para desbloquearlo:
- Pulsar botón izquierdo una vez para ver el test nº1, y saldrá el número de identificación de vuestro coche. En mi caso por ejemplo es: DJ34655. Tengo que sumar el número cifra a cifra: 3+4+6+5+5 = 23
- entonces tengo que pulsar 23 veces el botón izquierdo. Hay que darle tantas veces sume el nº de chasis.
- así, cuando le hayas dado al izquierdo 23 veces (en mi caso, en el vuestro las las que toquen), pulsas botón derecho del cuadro y pondrá "LOCKED: OFF", me parece. Ya está desbloqueado.
Después ya podrás ir pasando por los diferentes test que os he puesto ahí arriba y viendo diversos parámetros del coche. Hay algunos test que dan dos o tres parámetros, se ven dando al botón izquierdo para ir viéndolos.
Los más interesantes suelen ser la temperatura de agua, la autonomía y consumo medio del coche (para los que no tenemos OBC), litros que quedan en el depósito, velocidad real (un 4% inferior al velocímetro), rpm o curiosidades como el consumo instantáneo, que no sirven más que para vacilar a los colegas de los 47 litros que está gastando el coche en un repecho de 2ª
. Yo lo suelo llevar en autonomía (test 5) o en temperatura de agua (test 7) si quiero ver su variación en alguna circunstancia.
Según me han dicho la autonomía que marca es realmente exacta, si dice que te quedan 23 km es que te vas a quedar sin gasofa en esos km o menos si le pisas.
Ojo con variar parámetros de los últimos test, que te pueden variar despuésmedidas e indicaciones del coche en consumos y no sé si en algo más. Esos mejor no tocarlos.
El idioma no se puede cambiar desde el cuadro (test 4).
En fin, está gracioso el invento, aunque preferiría ver esas cosas en el OBC que no montaba mi coche de serie (ya le puse el módulo central de la consola con OBC pero me debe faltar alguna caja electrónica, no hace nada nuevo).
