If you’re seeking a Ferrari with wind-in-the-hair excitement, then Maranello will happily charge you a seven-figure sum to acquire a Monza SP1 and enjoy a staggering engine with little more than an aeroscreen for protection. Or of course, you could even spend eight figures on a 250 GT California.
But what if your budget would likely only stretch to a five-year-old BMW 4 Series Convertible? Well, there’s an answer for that, too. Enter, the 1988 Ferrari Mondial 3.2 Cabriolet, chassis number 75981. Purchased in May 2021 on Collecting Cars, the buyer was none other than a Mr Chris Harris, with a winning bid just over £21,000.
In a series of videos, Chris will report back on life with this mid-engined V8 Ferrari, starting here with an introduction, and then covering off some of the maintenance and refurbishment over the coming months.
Offered with low mileage, the Mondial was listed as having good bodywork, paint, and interior trim; though with a few known faults. Picking up the car shortly after the auction, there was an obvious fuel leak to sort in the future, but it fired up and got out on the road without any other issues.
Seeing the Pininfarina-styled bodywork and hearing the naturally aspirated, flat-plane crank V8 weaving through English B-roads should make anyone look at the Mondial twice. Its mid-engined four-seater Cabriolet layout is a true automotive oddity, but in this later 3.2 ‘Quattrovalvole’ guise, the Mondial romps along with a surprising turn of pace - not to mention with a typically evocative exhaust note.
While the bodywork, Rosso Corsa paint, and cream Connolly leather upholstery is as well-presented as expected, the underside does need some attention after no doubt being used through the full range of British weather. Another video may go into the details; suffice to say it will need some welding underneath, though it passed the last MOT test without any major issues being flagged.
Having stretched the legs of this convertible on a typical British spring day, rain was of course inevitable. While the mechanism on this car is sound, and the original soft top has just one small repaired tear, a loose securing pin on a front catch meant the process was far trickier than it should be. Nevertheless, this should be a straightforward fix, and once the roof can be opened and closed with relative ease, it should prove a boon through the summer months.
So far, ‘Project Mondial’ is shaping up to be a cheap and cheerful route into Ferrari ownership, with whatever it lacks in style being admirably counterbalanced with bags of character. It remains to be seen whether the cost and complexity of any refurbishment will put a dent in Chris’ smile, so check back on Collecting Cars for updates this summer.

Top Gear’s Chris Harris has bought a Ferrari Mondial 3.2 Cabriolet, which, even he admits, is “arguable the shittest Ferrari convertible ever made.” And yet, he seems quite happy with the purchase.

For one thing, it didn’t cost him very much – not by Ferrari standards, anyway. Harris reports having paid just over £21,000 ($29,188 USD) for the car, which he points out is barely enough for the deposit on a modern Ferrari convertible. It’s only a little less than the full price of an MX-5 Miata, though, which starts at £24,055 in the UK and at $26,830 in the US.

However, for his money, Harris has gotten access to a one-of-a-kind vehicle. Whereas Mazda has followed the trodden path by placing the engine at the front and giving the Miata just two seats, Ferrari showed more courage. For the Mondial, they put the engine in the middle and gave it four seats – a very unorthodox layout that, as far as we can remember, has been adopted since only by the Lotus Evora.

The engine in this one is a transverse-mounted 3.2-liter V8, which made 266 hp (270PS/199 kW) from the factory. In a car that weighs just 3,543 lbs (1,607 kg), that’s a healthy amount and gets the car going in a hurry, contrary to what you might believe about the Mondial.

“Of course, the first Mondial from the very early ’80s was laughable,” admits Harris. “Whereas this: this feels proper spritely to me. It’s a piece of joy! I love it!”

Even its terrible reputation (and less than stellar condition) aren’t knocks against it, argues Harris. He figures he can treat it like a real car. He can fix it in the cheapest way possible and not worry about it being Concours quality, he can let the dog in, put kids in it, and drive it all summer long without worrying about babying it like you might any other Ferrari.

Mind you, when the clouds break and he has to put the roof up, the illusion falls apart somewhat. Although the car might feel quicker than expected, putting the roof up certainly isn’t with its many snaps, buttons, and missing pins. It’s all very indicative of the reality of owning a questionable classic. How much you enjoy it will have everything to do with how willing you are to put up with its many shortcomings. If you don’t mind that, though, you can have a really good time.

Uno de mis mejores amigos vendo el suyo celeste, exactamente por eso. Y no tuve yo otra cosita que soltarlo yo como chiste en la piscina, en un hotel de Ronda, delante de la mujer... que no lo sabía.
-¿¿¿Cóooooooooooooooooooooooooooooomoooooo?? Fue lo que soltó, mirándolo con cara de Miura. Tarde. No lo pude arreglar. Fue vendido de inmediato.

 

Según dicen, es posiblemente uno de los "peores" Ferrari jamás fabricados, junto con el 400. Al menos el Dino y el 348 tienen la gracia de ser pequeños y en teoría más manejables.

Pero el amigo Harris cuenta con la gran ventaja de ser un conocido presentador y periodista del ramo, con lo cual creo que se las apañará para no perderle dinero... a diferencia de lo que nos pasaría a los demás.

 

Una mala tarde o una mala compra la puede tener cualquiera incluso si eres Chris Harris..........
Tampoco tiene problema para llegar a fin de mes el amigo

 

Un amigo por poco mas lo vendió el suyo , lo probé bien, estaba perfecto inmaculado ...y al final por menos de lo que quería se fue . Poco dinero por un Ferrari precioso ...y cuidado a tope.

 

Hombre, algo entiende de coches este tipejo Harris ya dice que conoce lo que ha comprado y que tiene que meter pasta, sacará una serie de vídeos informando del proceso que veremos por aquí , lo disfrutará y luego lo venderá sin perder dinero, que de tonto no tiene un pelo... aunque se le vea el cartón

 

... igual solo por promocionar a la web donde lo ha comprado ya ha ganado más de lo que cuesta el ferralla, si no es que es parte de ella...

En aquellos ratos que todo funcione bien, debe ser muy agradable de conducir.

 

El padre de un amigo lo tenía con techo y nunca se quejó de averías. Aunque vivía en Tenerife lo tenía en Madrid y creo que los aparca de todas los locales "In" conocían el coche.

 

Lo que me sorprende son los 1.600 kilos.

EQUIPMENT AND OPTIONS

• Standard equipment on the Mondial 3.2 included air-conditioning, tinted glass, electric windows, and electrically adjustable mirrors.

CONDITION

• Today, there are no signs of any bodywork damage, though one of the door skins was replaced by Ferrari in the early 1990s following parking damage.
• Believed to be largely original, the Rosso Corsa finish is in good order overall, with minor bubbling along the bottom of driver’s door, stone chips on the nose and a small spot of rust beneath the boot lid.
• The black convertible hood is in good order, featuring a repaired tear in the rear passenger-side section.
• Clad in its original Crema leather, the cabin presents very well, with a few imperfections in line with the car’s age, including scuffs on the lower door cards, damage to the leather luggage straps and slight misalignment of the centre console trim. One half of the driver’s seatbelt buckle’s plastic cover is also missing, and there are cracks in the black gear knob.
• The seller notes that the petrol filler flap’s solenoid is inoperable, so at the moment it must be opened manually through the engine bay. The air-conditioning system has also been decommissioned, and the electrically retractable radio antenna is not functioning.
• There is also a minor oil leak noted, and second gear does not engage until the gearbox is warm – though this is a common Ferrari foible from the era.
• The car’s last MOT test was conducted on 10 March 2021, which resulted in a pass after an issue with the offside rear fog lamp was addressed. Advisories noted wear to the edges of the offside front tyre and both rear tyres.

SERVICE HISTORY

• This Mondial’s most recent routine maintenance was carried out in May 2019 at 38,429 miles by classic car specialist Ed Watson & Co, who repaired the radiator and flushed the coolant system.
• The engine oil and oil filter were changed less than 1,000 miles ago, when the gearbox oil was also topped up and the handbrake shoes were adjusted.
• A major service was carried out in 2014, when the cam belt was replaced.
• During the seller’s ownership, a number of other components have been renewed, including the cam cover gaskets and oil seals, the gearshift linkage and seals, the driveshaft boot and the engine lid struts.

SUMMARY

This Ferrari Mondial 3.2 Cabriolet is a sound example of the Pininfarina-designed 2+2 sports car, finished in the classic pairing of Rosso Corsa over Crema leather and with low indicated mileage. While there are some minor cosmetic and mechanical issues which can be attended to in due course, this modern classic would make a fun V8 cruiser in which to take advantage of the warmer weather.

Jeje vi el video por la tarde, parece que va a hacer una pequeña serie con las aventuras y desventuras del Mondial.
La verdad que el diseño es flojete pero oye, al final la experiencia de conducción tiene que ser chula.

 

Seguramente, como se ha dicho más arriba, simplemente está haciendo publicidad... pero también podría ser que el coche le guste de verdad y le haya apetecido comprarlo. No creo que tenga problema para mantenerlo, ya sabe lo que es tener un Ferrari y su situación económica ya no es la misma que cuando tuvo que vender el 599GTB (creo que gana unos 750k al año en Top Gear).

Además, me parece que tiene toda la razón cuando dice que estos coches hay que conducirlos ahora, que todavía nos dejan, espero que le aproveche el hierro.

 

El 348 fue malo con intensidad, egoísmo y hasta criminalidad.

 

Efectivamente, el 348 y el Mondial no son de lo mejor en ajustes, acabados y fiabilidad de la historia de Ferrari.
Las hostias que te puedes llevar en el taller pueden ser de órdago....
De todas formas los 348 se cotizan bastante bien. El Mondial sigue siendo el patito feo.

 

A mí el 348 me gustaba estéticamente.

 

Precioso. Me chirriaba la trasera con los faros cuadrados como el Testarrosa.
Pero esa imagen de deportivo compacto, bajísimo y hecho de un solo trazo es sublime

 

Teniendo en cuenta que en los últimos cuatro años ha ganado la friolera de $XX millones, le debe sudar tres pimientos los problemas pecunarios que le pueda dar el coche.

 

Si no recuerdo mal, hace unos cuantos años, se vendía uno en este foro por el mismo importe.
