Porsche Buys 10 Percent Of Rimac To Help With Future Electric Vehicles
BY CARSCOOPS STAFF | POSTED ONJUNE 20, 2018

If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. Porsche, for one, seems to be embracing that idea with its most recent investment.

The German automaker has taken a ten-percent stake in Rimac – the Croatian startup known for its electric hypercars like the Concept_One and the C_Two. It just revealed the latter, nearly a decade after the former, at the Geneva Motor Show this past March, packing nearly 2,000 horsepower’s worth of electric propulsion, a 1.85-second 0-60 time, and a top speed quoted at 256 mph (412 km/h).

As impressive as Porsche’s electrified sports cars already are, those figures far eclipse what even the groundbreaking 918 Spyder was capable of. So Zuffenhausen is evidently tapping into Rimac’s expertise to help develop its next generation of electric performance machines – like the forthcoming Taycan that was previewed by the Mission E concept.

“By developing the purely electric two-seaters super sports cars, like the ‘Concept One’ or ‘C Two’, as well as core vehicle systems, Rimac has impressively demonstrated its credentials in the field of electromobility,” said Porsche finance and technology chief Lutz Meschke. “We feel that Rimac’s ideas and approaches are extremely promising, which is why we hope to enter into close collaboration with the company in the form of a development partnership.”

“This partnership now is an important step for Rimac on our way to become a component and system supplier of choice for the industry in electrification, connectivity and the exciting field of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems”, added Mate Rimac, founder and CEO of his namesake company (pictured below next to Porsche chief Oliver Blume). Rimac has a staff of around 400 at its headquarters near Zagreb, and also produces electric bicycles under the name Greyp Bikes.

The tie-in could ostensibly extend to other Volkswagen Group brands as well. But what we can’t help but wonder is how Porsche’s influence might shape Rimac’s involvement in projects for other automakers. The company is slated to help Automobili Pininfarina, for example, launch its own electric hypercar and a range of crossover EVs aimed squarely at Porsche.

The Rimac C_Two is the world’s most powerful electric hypercar, demonstrating the company’s expertise in high-performance vehicle systems.
Powered by a four-motor powertrain system with 1,914 horsepower and instantly available 2,300 Nm of torque, the C_Two accelerates 0-60 mph in 1.85 seconds, and reaches 300 kph (186 mph) in 11.8 seconds.
The 120 kWh battery capacity enables 550 km (310 miles) of range in WLTP cycle (650 km/403 miles NEDC).
These figures have taken the world by surprise, but with our new development efforts, the C_Two can, and will, see upgrades.
With prototypes in production, the C_Two will soon take its final shape, and in 2020 bring its new performance to the streets around the world showing just how far (and fast!) the technology of the all-electric future can go.

Porsche Increases Its Stake In Rimac To 15.5 Percent
    BY MICHAEL KARKAFIRIS | POSTED ONSEPTEMBER 6, 2019 10

Porsche already had a 10 percent stake in Rimac Automobili since June 2018, and has just acquired another 5.5 percent in a bid to strengthen their partnership.

The Croatian company, which was founded by Mate Rimac in 2009, has been developing and building components for electric vehicles, as well as its own battery-electric hypercars.

“We believe in what Mate Rimac and his company have to offer, which is why we have now increased our stake and intend to intensify our collaboration in the field of battery technology,” said Lutz Meschke, Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board at Porsche.

Rimac’s latest creation is the C_Two electric hypercar that was first shown at the Geneva Motor Show in 2018. Currently under development, the C_Two will offer a combined 1,972 HP (2,000 PS) from its four electric motors and a top speed of 258 mph (412 km/h).

“The fact that Porsche is now increasing its stake is the best form of confirmation for our collaboration and represents the foundation for an even closer relationship,” said Mate Rimac. “We are only at the start of our partnership – yet we have already met our high expectations. We have many collaborative ideas that we aim to bring to life in the future.”

Rimac is based in Zagreb and employs around 550 people, focusing on battery technologies, electric powertrains and the development of digital interfaces between human and machines (HMI). Development of its new electric hypercar is nearing its final stages and first customer deliveries are expected to take place in 2020.

    PRESS RELEASE
Porsche increases stake in Rimac to 15.5 percent
Stuttgart/Zagreb. Porsche has increased its stake in technology and sports car company Rimac Automobili to 15.5 percent. In June 2018, the Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer purchased a 10 percent stake in Rimac. Porsche is now strengthening the established partnership. The Croatian company develops and produces electromobility components and also produces electrically powered super sports cars in-house. Porsche initiated a development partnership with Rimac against the back-drop of its electric mobility campaign.

“Porsche has been supporting Rimac and its positive development for a year now,” explains Lutz Meschke, Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board at Porsche AG and Member of the Executive Board responsible for Finance and IT. “We quickly realized that Porsche and Rimac can learn a lot from each other. We believe in what Mate Rimac and his company have to offer, which is why we have now increased our stake and intend to intensify our collaboration in the field of battery technology.”

Founder Mate Rimac (31) started developing his vision of a fast, electrically powered sports car in a garage in 2009. Rimac unveiled his most recent electric car, the C Two, at the Geneva International Motor Show in March 2018. The two-seater vehicle generates almost 2,000 PS and reaches a top speed of 412 kilometers per hour. It boasts a range of 650 kilometers (NEDC) and can recharge 80 percent of its full battery capacity within half an hour thanks to a 250 kW fast-charging system. The company also develops and produces high-performance electric drives and battery systems.

“Gaining Porsche as a stakeholder was one of the most important milestones in our history. The fact that Porsche is now increasing its stake is the best form of confirmation for our collaboration and represents the foundation for an even closer relationship,” Managing Director Mate Rimac explains. “We are only at the start of our partnership – yet we have already met our high expectations. We have many collaborative ideas that we aim to bring to life in the future. The fundamental focus is creating a win-win situation for both partners and offering our end customers added value by developing exciting, electrified models.”

The rapidly growing company based in Zagreb employs a workforce of around 550. Rimac focusses on battery technology within the high-voltage segment, electric powertrains and developing digital interfaces between humans and machines (HMI). The company also develops and produces electric bikes. This strand of the business was established in 2013 in the form of the sister company Greyp Bikes.

Hyundai And Kia Team Up With Rimac To Make An Electric Mid-Engine Sports Car

The Hyundai Motor Group wants to make a statement in the electrified car market, and Rimac Automobili will help them achieve that goal. The strategic partnership announced today will see Hyundai and Kia invest €64 million and €16 million ($72-$18 million), respectively, into the Croatian company.

As part of the collaboration, all three car brands will work closely together to develop new vehicles. One of them will be Hyundai N’s midship sports car, which will be previewed by a concept at first, as well as a high-performance fuel cell model. Both of them will be launched at a later time.

“Rimac is an innovative company with outstanding capabilities in high-performance electric vehicles, said Hyundai Motor Group’s Executive Vice Chairman, Euisun Chung. “Its startup roots and abundant experience collaborating with automakers with technological prowess makes Rimac the ideal partner for us. We look forward to collaborating with Rimac on our road to Clean Mobility.”

Mate Rimac, Founder and CEO, added: “We are very impressed by Hyundai Motor Group’s vision as well as prompt and decisive initiative. We believe this technology partnership will create maximum value for our companies and their customers. Rimac is still young and relatively small, but a fast-growing company. We see a strong investor and technology partner in Hyundai Motor Group and believe this collaboration will charge our position as a Tier-1 electrification components supplier to the industry.”

Hyundai’s attempt of bringing a mid-engine model to the market dates back to 2014, when they unveiled the Veloster RM Concept. One year later, they presented a more refined version of the show car. The RM15 was powered by a mid-mounted 296 horsepower and 282 pound-feet (382 Nm) of torque 2.0-liter petrol engine, which allowed it to accelerate to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.7 seconds.

In 2016, a prototype was unleashed at the Nurburgring, thus fueling reports of an imminent reveal, which, however, never materialized.

Rimac, on the other hand, is responsible for two extreme battery-electric hypercars: the Concept One and C_Two. They also collaborated with Pininfarina and Aston Martin for the Battista and Valkyrie, respectively, and will help Porsche in their electric future, after the German company purchased a 10 percent stake last summer.

Mate Rimac on C_Two progress and opening a British R&D centre
Founder of the Croatian EV maker and tech company tells us the latest on its 1900bhp hypercar and more
    • [IMG]
Mate Rimac is poised to unveil the production version of his company's C_Two electric hypercar concept at the Geneva motor show next March and has already concluded a world-first deal with the London-based HR Owen dealer group to put both the car and supporting tech products on sale early in its life.

He has also announced plans to open a research and development centre here because he “likes working with Brits” and regards the UK as home to Europe’s best, most pragmatic engineers.

The 1900bhp, four-motored, 256mph Croatian-built hypercar, which is claimed to sprint from 0-60mph in less than 2.0sec and has Level 4 autonomy that can teach you the fastest way around race tracks, will go into production at the end of next year. It should become available to UK buyers during 2021 for around £2 million.

Orders are being taken now, and UK cars will be delivered exclusively from a new £40 million HR Owen 'experience centre' in Hatfield, Hertfordshire that the group is building as an outlet for all of its luxury brands.

Rimac, whose boss is in London this week to announce the deal, will make 40-50 examples of the hypercar per year, plus a similar number of the Pininfarina Battista, which uses the same Rimac-designed all-carbonfibre chassis and mechanicals.

The 600-strong organisation has been wowing car industry 'majors' with its ambition and knowhow (it's already 14% owned by Porsche and 15% by Hyundai-Kia) and has already built up a thriving business supplying battery technology and electrified sub-systems to bigger car companies. It will limit production of its own cars carefully. “If we stay under 100 units a year,” says Mate Rimac, “the big guys don’t care."

Production of the C_Two will begin well before the year's end, Rimac says, because the company will build around 25 pre-production prototypes. Finished cars will weigh around 2000kg (about the same as a Bugatti Chiron at the kerb), which seems heavy until you remember that 700kg of that is a 120kWh battery that delivers both enormous performance and a generous WLTP range of 340 miles.

The car began life with a two-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, but Rimac says progress with electric motor design has allowed for a lighter, less complex single-speed unit.

As well as offering huge performance, Rimac says the hypercar will be spacious, allow easy access and be generally “liveable with”. Although closely related to the C_Two, the production model will have a different name. “I can’t tell you what it’s called yet”, says Rimac. “We haven’t decided yet."
