New 2020 BMW M4 partially revealed alongside GT3 racer
BMW has essentially revealed the new M4 Competition alongside its racer cousin


This is the new BMW M4 Competition. So it’s still hidden under some stickers, but the gig is up, we know about the grille. The new M4 and its four-door M3 siblings (there’s a Touring coming too) have been seen in various states of undress for a while now, so until we get all the official images, here’s what we know about BMW’s new M4.

Both the M4 and its four-door M3 siblings will come equipped with an S58 3-litre twin-turbocharged straight-six petrol engine that’s already found in the X3 M. It’s based on the modular B58 found in models across the portfolio, but adopts a larger bore and a shorter stroke for a marginal reduction in capacity, and to safely support an increased 7250rpm rev limit.


These internal changes have yielded a lower compression ratio, while the B58’s single twin-scroll turbocharger has also been swapped for a pair of single-scroll items; the oil pan, intake, oil coolers and heads have all been uprated too, the latter with some 3D printed internals. Both standard and Competition M4 models produce a peak 442lb ft of torque, with only the power figures of 473bhp and 503bhp separating the two.

The lower-powered ‘standard’ M4s will be available with a six-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive, with the higher-powered Competition available with an eight-speed torque-converter transmission replacing the current model’s dual-clutch setup. Competition models will also soon be available with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system, with the same ability to decouple the front axle as on the M5 and M8 Competitions.



BMW UK hasn’t confirmed whether the marque is likely to offer just one or both models locally, but the UK’s propensity to only take high-spec Competition models and not the ‘base’ M models over the past few years makes for a grim reality if you have your heart set on one with a manual transmission; best get your BMW dealership on the phone now to push the subject.

As seen in these new images, the BMW’s most controversial aspect is more likely to be its distinctive face, which is dominated by two large upright kidney grilles with horizontal slats that signal a big departure from tradition. As elaborated in a conversation with BMW’s design chief Domagoj Dukec, the team seem to have no qualms about playing with signature graphics in its new designs, something extrapolated on by the loss of the hofmeister kink on the rear window or the single solid bodyline extending front to rear. While this is sure to ruffle plenty of feathers, BMW is adamant that it will attract as many buyers as it might repel, all while giving the M4 plenty of coverage


The M4 Coupe will be joined by a Cabriolet variant which is due to ditch its folding hardtop roof in favour of a fabric unit as with the standard 4-series, followed by the four-door M3 saloon, plus about 24 months later a Touring model for the first time, giving BMW an RS4/C63 S Estate rival for the first time.

The figures refer to a vehicle with basic configuration in Germany and the range shown considers optional equipment and the different size of wheels and tires available on the selected model.

The values of the vehicles are already based on the new WLTP regulation and are translated back into NEDC-equivalent values in order to ensure the comparison between the vehicles. BMW M4 and M4 GT3 prototypes presented by BMW M CEO


The BMW M division decided to hold a special event at the MotoGP race this week, presenting the upcoming BMW M4 and M4 GT3 models, with a twist. No, these aren’t their official world premieres as that’s going to happen on September 23rd. However, the cars shown in the video below are prototypes of the two, with some very carefully selected camo applied, to make sure the essentials aren’t given away.

The MotoGP race held on the Red Bull Ring was the first one where BMW was a title sponsor, the Germans collaborating with Dorna Sports (the MotoGP organizer) for about 20 years. Since this was a special occasion, the Bavarians decided to also bring out these two prototypes at the ‘BMW M Grand Prix of Styria‘. We also had two very special presenters for them: the BMW M CEO, Markus Flasch and BMW Works driver Connor de Phillippi.



While the former took care of the BMW M4, the latter was in charge of dealing with the racing car, the BMW M4 GT3. This will be an important model for the motorsport efforts of BMW, as it is going to replace the aging BMW M6 GT3 as well as the Z4 GT3 once it comes out, becoming virtually BMW’s only proposition in this segment.

It will be a long-awaited retirement for the M6 GT3 which has been used in various events since 2016, winning the Spa-Franchorchamps 24 hours during its debut year, only to surpass this success with a double victory two years later.

As for the ‘regular’ M4, there’s no valuable added info available in the video, unfortunately. We already know just about everything about the car and we’re still a few weeks away from its full unveiling.

We know it’s going to be powered by the same engine found in the X3 M, it will also get a Competition version and will be offered in both automatic and manual guises with rear-wheel drive, for those more hardcore fans of the letter M.

Uno de los primeros BMW M4 Coupé 2021 será para Miguel Oliveira tras su victoria en MotoGP este fin de semana.

Miguel Oliveira gana un BMW M4 Coupé tras vencer en MotoGP en el BMW M Grand Prix of Styria celebrado este pasado fin de semana. El piloto portugués tiene que estar muy contento y no solo por el fantástico resultado obtenido en la categoría reina de motociclismo. También porque ha sido uno de las primeras personas que ha podido conducir el nuevo BMW M4 Coupé 2021 tras su triunfo en el trazado austriaco.

Además será uno de los primeros propietarios del nuevo y flamante modelo deportivo de BMW. Decimos será porque aunque ha sido ahora cuando Miguel Oliveira ha ganado el BMW M4 Coupé tras su triunfo en MotoGP, todavía tendrá que esperar. Concretamente hasta que comience su producción y salga a la venta. Porque es un vehículo tan nuevo que aún no ha sido presentado oficialmente (su debut tendrá lugar en septiembre), así que de momento se va a casa solo con esa experiencia.

Miguel Oliveira: “No puedo esperar a tener el mío”


Y es que Oliveira pudo subirse a bordo del M4 2021 para experimentar en primera persona las bondades del nuevo deportivo de BMW M. Condujo la misma unidad que vimos hace unos días posando junto al nuevo BMW M4 GT3, la variante de competición que la marca ha presentado en este circuito. “He podido conocer al nuevo BMW M4 aquí en el Red Bull Ring y no puedo esperar para tener el mío. Me gustaría agradecer a BMW M este fantástico premio”, afirma Oliveira.

Hasta ahora, BMW había obsequiado al campeón absoluto de MotoGP en numerosas ocasiones con el BMW M Award (que Marc Márquez ha ganado en las últimas siete ediciones). Pero esta es la primera vez que BMW M GmbH cede uno de sus coches para el vencedor de un gran premio. Una prueba que precisamente patrocinaba la división deportiva de la firma alemana. Así que Miguel Oliveira gana un BMW M4 Coupé y también se ha convertido en el primer piloto en llevarse un premio de este tipo.

 

Como para no estarlo, hasta ahora solo se lo daban al ganador absoluto y los últimos 7 se los ha llevado Márquez, este es el primero que dan por ganar una carrera, a Oliveira no le va a importar el morrochoto

 

Estos M se los dan al piloto con más poles conseguidas a lo largo del año, no al ganador del mundial.

BMW M4 2021: el borrador del diseño muestra G82 con riñón desactivado




Ningún otro tema se debate tanto en la actualidad entre los fanáticos de BMW como el mega riñón para la nueva generación de BMW M4 y M3. Incluso en las discusiones sobre las últimas imágenes teaser , el enorme riñón con sus puntales horizontales fue el tema de conversación número 1 y realmente no es necesario poder leer entre líneas para reconocer las reservas que tienen muchos fanáticos: mientras que el lado y la parte trasera del BMW M4 G82 de son percibidos y descritos como exitosos por casi todos los espectadores, el frente generalmente recibe fuertes críticas y, a veces, incluso se lo denomina un criterio KO para la elección del vehículo.


Los diseños actuales de zer.o.wt muestran que los diseñadores, con su deseo de una mayor diferenciación entre las series 4 y 3, también podrían lograr el éxito con soluciones ligeramente más pequeñas entre la serie M4 y la serie 4 básica . Le dio al BMW M4 G82 un riñón significativamente más pequeño, pero aún muy notable. Debido a los riñones algo más pequeños, todavía habría suficiente espacio debajo para la placa de matrícula para que no tenga que romper el diseño de los riñones. Además, los típicos puntales dobles M dentro del riñón son verticales en su diseño, lo que daría como resultado un valor de reconocimiento mucho mayor en comparación con los modelos anteriores que con los puntales horizontales del M4 G82 real.



El diseño frontal alternativo de zer.o.wt no carecería de agresividad e independencia: además de la llamativa parrilla de doble riñón, los faros cónicos y las llamativas entradas de aire en la parte inferior aseguran un gran prestigio.


El nuevo BMW M4 Coupé (G82) se dará a conocer finalmente en septiembre, y al mismo tiempo se presentará el diseño del nuevo M3 Sedan (G80). Los dos atletas de gama media compartirán el mismo diseño frontal que las generaciones anteriores y celebrarán su lanzamiento al mercado en la primavera de 2021, seguido del convertible M4 (G83) en otoño. El primer BMW M3 Touring (G81) siguió incluso más tarde .


Las últimas fotos teaser del BMW M4 G82 no dejan lugar a dudas con respecto al diseño de riñón en el vehículo de producción y muestran en detalle el aspecto con el que M GmbH y su jefe Markus Flasch quieren atacar:

Así sí!! mira que no puedo con las parrillas XXL pero al menos de esta manera no rompe con todo el diseño y evitas meterle la matrícula en el medio de los riñones.
